What is the metaverse?

The metaverse is a set of digital spaces, including immersive 3D experiences, that are all interconnected so you can easily move between them. It will let you do things you couldn't do in the physical world with people you can't physically be with. It will feel like a hybrid of today's online social experiences, sometimes expanded into 3 dimensions or projected into the physical world—and seamlessly stitched together so that you can easily jump from one thing to another. It won't happen overnight, but over time, the metaverse will unlock new opportunities for people and communities. No one company can build the metaverse alone, but we’re excited to help bring this vision to life.

Understanding Youth Perspectives of the Metaverse

Long standing safety partners, PROJECT ROCKIT are proud to be undertaking the first Australian youth consultation about the metaverse. Throughout 2022, PROJECT ROCKIT will convene 35 youth advisors nominated by community partners from leading organisations in youth, mental health, and technology from across Australia including headspace, ReachOut, Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY), UNICEF, Minus18, Orygen and Indigital.

Investing in Australian Research

In 2020, Meta announced the XR Programs and Research Fund, a two-year USD $50 million (approx AU$65 million) investment into a number of research programs to build the metaverse responsibly. We’re pleased to announce our first Australian partner, the Australian National University (ANU) School of Cybernetics who will receive a research gift as part of this fund to continue their work focussed on cybernetic systems, including the metaverse.
